In Valiant you will play a Hero of your own making. Using the world setting and campaign information as a starting point you will create a persona to play in game as a member of the Valiant Larping Community. Your character will be a new arrival in a settlement filled with other newcomers from across the world.

In this settlement dramatic events will happen. These dramatic events be wondrous, intriguing, or terrifying and will happen around you, near you, and sometimes TO you. Where you go from there is up to you. In playing along with the storyline players will sometimes but not always want to use game skills. Remember that skills, combat, puzzles, and the rest are not the game, just spice to it. The goal of the Valiant Larp is for all involved to get away for the weekend, get into character, and have a lot of fun.

Valiant uses Character Points to allow players to improve their character’s skills and attributes. All players begin with 100 character points [CP].

Players earn Character Points in various ways.

  1. Attending an event earns each player 7cp, we credit the account when we receive the message of a completed feedback form on the site.
  2. Setup or cleanup work under the direction of staff is worth 3cp.
  3.  Bringing a new player [PC] to Valiant after September 2008 earns a player 10 cp.
  4.  You may earn 10 CP by volunteering to staff a weekend at a LARP that exchanges CP with Valiant. CP is awarded when the LARP confirm this in an email.
  5. Recurring duties such as Site Check, website management, Nurse/EMT status, and kitchen staff are worth CP. The awards vary. Contact staff if interested.
  6. Valiant regularly offers CP in exchange for collecting or building specific props. Prop needs are posted before events and are awarded on a first come first serve basis. We try to spread these around.
  7. Strict donations of items or work with no cash value can be rewarded with CP.
  8. Ad Hoc CP will be rewarded from time to time for specific contribution to the game. Examples are creating stories and music in game and donating written props for common use.

Character histories are required before attending Valiant, and do not earn extra CP.

Players update their characters via a database tool linked to the Valiant website. All questions regarding CP totals, CP earned etc are directed to valiantgames@hotmail.com with a subject line of <Character Name>  CDB.

If you have no web access, please contact any staff member to bring it to our attention. We will try to work out a solution with you.

We use an online Character Generator
When playing Valiant you will sometimes perform actions enhanced or made possible by skills. These things include fighting with weapons, speaking with fantastic creatures, casting and breaking spells, and surviving horrible deathtraps.

Common Skills are on a list open to all characters. These are skills anyone can learn, wherever they come from.

Once a player has chosen a Nation they receive the rules and background for their homeland. This opens up a huge amount of choices to the player. Skills in each National Rulebook are not to be read by players of other homelands. This prohibition is important to the design of the game and is its first rule.

Headers represent a background. Buying them assumes that the character lived a life that fits the idea of the Header. A Soldier header implies that living as a regular soldier in an army has opened opportunities to the character. They may learn weapon skills, know how to repair armor etc. The character history, dress, and behavior of the character may reflect this background.

Read skill descriptions for prerequisites, and note which skills are leveled, and can be improved by buying more advanced versions of the same skill. There are MANY skills not printed in the rulebook. These skills may become available to you based on interaction with people or events in game, even unpleasant events. Some will become apparent when you develop your character’s potential along specific lines or themes. Keep an eye out!

Keep in mind:

  1. CP need not be spent immediately. It can be saved as “unspent cp”. This might be useful if access to a special in-game teacher is in the works.
  2. Valiant adds CP for attendance to a character record when we receive the Feedback Letter after an event. The web form or mailed Feedback Letter is necessary to earn this CP.
  3. Points earned for volunteering, donating etc. are added upon receipt of an email with details as to what was done and how much CP is expected.
  4. Character Points cannot be purchased or traded with staff.
  5. All spent CP on a character is gone if the character dies permanently.
  6. All new characters start with the initial allotment of 100 points.
  7. All players may donate CP once per year to another player.
  8. Re-spending CP and other character changes may be done upon GM approval if requested by email between events.
  9. The ability to update smoothly at the door is never guaranteed. Please update via the web whenever possible.

When the curtain goes up at an event and things start rolling, we are out to have a good time. We aren’t perfect, rule are sometimes forgotten or misunderstood. We don’t stop the fun to quibble about trivia. We play. If there is confusion about over a rule, we work it out amicably and keep rolling. If a rule causes repeated confusion it is brought up after the event and may get reworded, clarified or removed.
